Morse code practice that trains your ears: six drills, the two speed settings that matter, how to score a session at 90%, and what to do when you stall.

Practice is one thing repeated: hear a character you were not expecting, write down what you heard, then check whether you were right. Everything else is decoration. Most people stall not because they practise too little, but because they practise by looking.

If you can see the dots and dashes while you listen, you are training your eyes. Your ears learn nothing from a chart on the screen. Cover it, play a random character, and commit to an answer before you check. That single change is worth more than any amount of extra study time.

Be clear about what practice is for. You can memorise the whole chart in an afternoon. Copying by ear at a useful speed takes weeks of short daily sessions, because it is motor learning and consolidates between sessions rather than during them. No schedule shortens that, and anyone promising a day means the chart, not the skill.

How Morse is written on this page

A dot is . and a dash is -. Letters are separated by a space, words by /. So this is PARIS:

Real dots and hyphens, so you can copy any block here and paste it into a player. Out loud, operators say the sounds instead of the shapes: a dot is a dit, a dash is a dah. R is "di-dah-dit". Say the characters that way from your first session and they stop being pictures.

Set two speeds before you drill anything

Every practice tool worth using has two speed settings, and confusing them is the usual setup mistake.

  • Character speed is how fast each character is sent. This should be your target speed from day one, and it never drops.
  • Overall speed is how fast the text arrives once the silence between characters is counted. This is the dial you turn down when you are struggling.

Speed is measured in words per minute against the reference word PARIS, which is exactly 50 units long once the word gap after it is counted. One unit is the length of a dot, and the arithmetic is one line: dot length in seconds = 1.2 ÷ WPM.

The gaps are the standard ones: 1 unit inside a character, 3 between characters, 7 between words. Stretching the last two is Farnsworth spacing, and it is what makes a 20 WPM character survivable in week one.

Here is what that padding is actually worth. Of the 50 units in PARIS, 31 are the characters themselves and 19 are the gaps. Send the characters at 20 WPM and they take 1.86 seconds; the rest of your time budget gets shared out over those 19 gap units.

At 20 WPM characters and 5 WPM overall you get more than a second and a half to write each letter, and the letter sounds exactly as it will when you are fast. Take the padding out a little at a time. The characters never change, which is the point. More arithmetic is in timing and WPM.

One number for planning a session: 1 WPM is 5 characters per minute, so characters padded down to 5 WPM overall arrive 25 a minute. Ten minutes of that is 250 characters. That is a real session.

Six drills, in the order they become useful

Run the one that matches where you are, and move on when the score says to.

1. Two-character discrimination

Two characters, at full target speed, in random order. The traditional pair is K -.- and M --, chosen because both begin with a dash, so guessing by length fails and you have to hear the shape.

Listen once, write ten letters, then check. Add a third character only at 90% accuracy. That gate is the Koch method in one sentence.

2. Random groups from your current set

Groups of five are the standard unit: short enough to hold, long enough to stop you resting between characters. Use only characters you have already learned. Four groups from the usual first eight: K, M, R, S, U, A, P, T:

Write each group in pencil, one character behind the audio. That lag feels wrong for about a week and then becomes the thing that lets you copy at speed.

3. Confusable pairs

Most of your errors come from a handful of pairs, and general practice barely touches them. Set the trainer to two or three characters and run three minutes of nothing else.

If you can hear those nine rows, you can hear the alphabet. Check a character on the alphabet chart afterwards, which is the only time you should be looking at it.

4. Word copy

As soon as you have six characters, stop copying only random letters. Words carry rhythm, and your brain starts predicting, which is what fluency is. From K, M, R, S, U, A, P and T:

That is MARK PART TRAP RUST. Note the / between words: a 7-unit gap, more than twice the gap between characters and obvious once you stop counting.

With the full alphabet, drill the words that appear most often in real text. They become single sounds faster than anything else:

5. Mixed letter and number groups

Once letters are solid, mix digits in. Every digit is five elements, so they are long and easy to lose, and real traffic is full of them.

Digits follow a pattern that makes them cheap to learn: 1 to 5 add dashes from the right, and 6 to 0 mirror it by adding dots. The breakdown, with the sixteen punctuation marks, is in numbers and punctuation.

6. Head copy

The last drill has no paper. Play a short word, do not write, just say what it was. Start with three-letter words you know cold, then four, then sentences.

Head copy feels like a wall for a while, because you are holding sound in memory instead of dumping it onto paper. It arrives suddenly. Reading Morse by sound rather than by counting is the same skill one step earlier.

Score every session, or it is not practice

A session you did not score is a session you cannot learn from. Scoring takes sixty seconds and turns repetition into progress.

Copy 50 characters. Count the ones you got wrong. Five errors or fewer is 90%, the gate for adding a new character. Six or more means you run the same set again tomorrow. Then write two lines somewhere you will keep:

  • The characters you actually missed, not the ones you felt shaky on.
  • Your character speed and overall speed for that session.

After a week that list is your confusable-pairs drill, and it will be shorter than you expect: most people miss four or five characters over and over while believing they are bad at all 26. A scored quiz once a week checks that the daily numbers are honest.

A fifteen-minute session

Fifteen minutes daily beats two hours on a Sunday. Morse consolidates between sessions, so frequency is the variable that matters.

If you miss a day, do not make it up with a double session. Just run the next one.

Practise sending, not only receiving

Sending is half the skill and gets a tenth of the attention. It also goes bad quietly: a sloppy rhythm is easy to build and slow to remove. Operators call your sending rhythm your fist. Three rules cover most of it.

  • Keep the ratio. A dash is exactly three dots long, not "a bit longer". The gaps are 1, 3 and 7 units. If you cannot hold that by feel, send along with a metronome.
  • Do not rush the gaps. Most beginners send the characters correctly and run the words together. Gaps are information.
  • Check yourself. Send into a microphone and let a decoder read it back. If software cannot read you, a person cannot either. It is the fastest feedback loop available.

Good material: your own callsign, or your name, which you will send thousands of times if you get on the air. Then the procedure signals, sent as one unbroken run with no letter gaps inside them:

That is AR for end of message, SK for end of contact, BT for a break, and eight dots for "ignore my last word". Learn the error signal early; you will use it constantly. There are more, along with the Q-codes, in prosigns and Q-codes.

SOS belongs in the sending drill too, and most pages get it wrong. It is a prosign, sent as one continuous nine-element run:

...---...

No letter gaps inside it. Sent as the three separate letters ... --- ... it is a different signal. It also does not stand for "Save Our Souls" or "Save Our Ship". Those are backronyms invented afterwards. It was chosen because the pattern is unmistakable and easy to send. The full story is here.

Practising when you cannot make a sound

Sound is the main channel, not the only one, and the alternatives turn a bus ride or a shared room into a session.

  • Light. A phone torch blinking dots and dashes trains the same timing and is a real signalling method. See Morse with a flashlight.
  • Vibration. Silent, and good for rhythm, because you feel the length difference rather than judging it. Try tapping and vibration.
  • Tapping. A fingertip on a table. Send the words you are trying to learn while you wait for something.

These are supplements. Copying by ear stays the core, because the ear resolves timing far better than the eye.

What a practice tool has to do

Most of the difference between tools is one list. A trainer is worth using if it can do these five things:

  • Send characters at a fixed target speed while the overall speed is separate, so Koch ordering and Farnsworth spacing work together.
  • Generate random material from a set you choose, rather than replaying the same file.
  • Hide the answer until you commit to one.
  • Score you, and remember the score, so 90% is a number instead of a feeling.
  • Run offline, because the practice you actually do is the practice that needs no signal.

When you stall

Everyone stalls, usually for the same reason: you are still counting elements and there is no longer time to.

  • Speed the characters up, do not slow them down. Counting is a symptom of characters that are slow enough to count. Raise the character speed and pad the spacing back out.
  • Drop back. Three days on the six characters you keep missing does more than three days on all 26.
  • Change the material. A month of random letters goes stale. Copy words, or numbers.
  • Sleep on it. Consolidation is real. A plateau that will not move on Friday is often gone by Monday with no extra work.

If you are heading for the air, start copying real contacts as soon as you hold six or seven characters. The exchanges are short and formulaic, which makes them easier than plain text. That path is in Morse and CW on the air.

Common mistakes

Watching the code while you listen. The most expensive habit available.

Slowing the characters down. Slow characters teach a rhythm that does not exist at speed. You will spend longer unlearning it than you saved.

Practising rarely, in long sessions. Motor learning wants frequency. Two hours on Sunday lose to fifteen minutes daily.

Writing dots and dashes down, then decoding them later. It feels like progress and builds the wrong loop. Write letters.

Never scoring. Without a number you add characters when you feel confident, which is not the same as being accurate.

Skipping numbers and punctuation. Both show up in real traffic, and every digit is five elements, longer than any letter.

Treating Koch and Farnsworth as a choice. Koch is which characters and when. Farnsworth is how much silence sits between them. Different variables, so they stack.

Questions people ask

How long should I practise Morse code each day?

Fifteen minutes, every day, beats any weekly total delivered in one sitting. Two short sessions are better still, because the gap between them is where the learning consolidates. Past about thirty minutes attention drops and errors start teaching the wrong thing.

What is the best way to practise Morse code?

Random characters from a small set, at full character speed, with the answer hidden until you commit. Score 50, add a character at 90% accuracy, and log the ones you missed. That loop is the method; tools are only ways of running it.

Should I practise with a chart in front of me?

No. Use the chart to look something up afterwards, or to write Morse on paper. If it is visible while you listen you are practising reading, and reading does not transfer to hearing.

What speed should I practise at?

Set the character speed to where you want to end up, commonly 20 WPM, and lower the overall speed until you can keep up. At 20 WPM characters and 5 WPM overall you get about 1.6 seconds between characters, enough to write one down without hurrying.

How do I stop counting dots and dashes?

Speed the characters up. Counting only works at low speeds, so raising the character speed removes the option, and padding the gaps keeps the pace manageable while your ear takes over.

How do I practise sending?

Send short, known material correctly rather than fast and ragged, holding the 1:3:7 ratio. Then read it back with a decoder. Software that cannot read your sending is telling you something a patient friend would not.

Can I practise Morse code without making noise?

Yes. Vibration and a phone torch train the same timing, and tapping on a table works for sending. Keep some listening in the routine anyway, because the ear judges the length of a dash more precisely than the eye judges the length of a flash.

How do I know when to add the next character?

Copy 50 characters from your current set and count the errors. Five or fewer is 90% and you add one character, never two. Six or more and you run the same set again tomorrow. Adding a character on top of a shaky one costs more time than waiting.

Is it worth using a trainer app instead of a website?

What matters is separate character and overall speeds, random material, hidden answers, scoring that persists, and whether it runs where you actually have fifteen spare minutes. A phone wins the last one: practice happens on buses and in queues more often than at a desk.
