SOS in Morse code is ...---...: three dots, three dashes, three dots, sent
as one unbroken run with no letter gaps inside it.
It does not stand for anything. Not "Save Our Souls", not "Save Our Ship". Those are backronyms, attached to the signal after it was already in use. The pattern was chosen because it is unmistakable and easy to send, and for no other reason.
It is also not really the letters S, O and S. SOS is a prosign: one procedural signal that happens to look like three letters once you write it down. Send it as three separate letters, with the normal gaps between them, and you have sent something else. That difference is what a page about SOS should explain, and it is what most of them leave out.

Writing it so it survives a copy and paste
Morse has two marks: a dot . and a dash -. Operators say them aloud as "dit"
and "dah", which is closer to what they actually sound like. Inside a normal
message, letters are separated by one space and words by a slash, so
.... . .-.. .--. / -- . is HELP ME.
Use a full stop and a hyphen from your keyboard, nothing else. A middot, a bullet, an en dash or an em dash from a word processor looks right on screen and breaks the moment somebody pastes it into a translator, which is exactly what readers do with a Morse string.
There are no letter gaps inside the signal. Its elements are spaced the way they are inside any single character: one unit of silence between them, and nothing wider anywhere. Copy this:

Both forms are everywhere, and on paper the spaced one is easier to read. It is how most charts print it, including the alphabet chart. Nothing goes wrong until you send it. As sound, light or vibration those two lines are two different transmissions.
In printed radio material the prosign is written as the letters SOS with a single bar drawn over all three. The bar means exactly this: no gaps, run them together.
The spacing is the signal
Everything in Morse is measured in units, where one unit is the length of a dot.

A dash is not "a bit longer" than a dot. It is exactly three times as long. Hold that ratio and any speed is readable. Lose it and no speed is.
Now take the same nine elements, three short then three long then three short, and move nothing but the gaps.

There is a second reason the unbroken form is safe. Among the characters in the
international standard, letters run to four elements at most, digits to five,
the longest punctuation mark is the dollar sign ...-..- at seven, and the
error prosign is eight dots. Nothing reaches nine. So an unbroken run of nine
elements cannot be a letter, a digit or a mark. It can only be SOS.
The pattern is also a palindrome. ...---... reads the same in both
directions, so there is no wrong end to start from.
How long SOS takes to send
Speed in Morse is words per minute, measured against the reference word PARIS, which including the word gap after it is exactly 50 units long. That gives the only formula you need:
Dot length in seconds = 1.2 ÷ WPM.
Count the units in each version:
...---...is 3 dots (3 units) plus 3 dashes (9 units) plus 3 dots (3 units), so 15 units of signal, plus 8 one-unit gaps between the elements. Total 23 units.... --- ...is S (5 units), a 3-unit gap, O (11 units), a 3-unit gap, then S (5 units). Total 27 units.

Four units looks like a small difference on paper and is an obvious one by ear, because a listener is not timing the total. They are listening for whether the sound stops in the middle. Morse code timing and WPM works the ratio through in full.
Sending by hand you will be slower than every row in that table, and that is fine. Pick a one-second dot: the dash becomes three seconds, every gap inside the signal is one second, and the whole of SOS takes 23 seconds. That works out at 1.2 words per minute. Nobody is grading the speed.
What SOS does not stand for
"Save Our Souls" and "Save Our Ship" are backronyms. They were fitted to the signal afterwards, because three initials invite an explanation and people supply one. The pattern came first.
The real reason is duller and better. A distress call has to survive interference, arrive at the edge of hearing, and be sendable by someone frightened and untrained. Three short, three long, three short is symmetrical, has no ambiguous middle, and can be produced with a flashlight on the first attempt by a person who has never sent a character of Morse in their life. Meaning would have added nothing to that.
This is not only trivia. People who believe SOS is an abbreviation tend to send it as three letters, because separating letters is what you do with an abbreviation. The myth produces the mistake.
Sending it with light, sound, a tap or a phone
The medium does not matter. The ratio does.

Tapping is the awkward one, because a knock has no length. In practice people use two sounds that are easy to tell apart, a knuckle and a fingertip, or a tap and a short scrape, and keep the gaps honest instead.
Repeat the signal rather than sending it once. Leave a gap between repeats that is clearly longer than any gap inside it. A word gap is seven units, at the one-second dot above, seven seconds of stillness, which nobody will hear as a gap inside the signal.

Where SOS still means something
Accurate beats dramatic here.
The maritime distress role SOS once held was replaced by GMDSS, an automated
system. No coast station sits with headphones on waiting for ...---.... On a
boat it is the radio, the beacon and the phone that summon help, and Morse is
not in that chain any more.
What survives is human recognition. ...---... is one of very few code patterns
a stranger might identify with no chart in front of them, from a window, a
hillside, a stuck lift or a flashlight across a valley. It costs nothing to
learn and it belongs in your hands rather than in a notebook.
Morse itself is far from finished. Amateur radio CW is the living use, because a CW signal gets through when voice will not, at very low power, and aviation and marine navigation beacons still identify themselves in Morse. Is Morse code still used? goes through what is left and what is gone.
One request that is not a legal opinion: do not send SOS as a joke. A signal everybody recognises only keeps working while everybody trusts it.
Wearing it: jewellery, tattoos and engraving
Plenty of people want SOS as an object rather than a transmission, and that is where the spacing goes wrong permanently.
- Draw the dash three times the width of the dot, and make it obvious. Designers routinely draw a dash barely longer than a dot, which turns the piece into a row of nine dots and means nothing.
- Keep the gaps inside the signal equal and small. Do not open wider gaps between the three groups unless you actually want the three separate letters.
- Check it reversed before it is permanent.
...---...is a palindrome, so it survives being read backwards or wrapped around a ring, which is more than most Morse strings manage. A name or a date will not be so forgiving, as i love you in Morse code and the phrase collection show.
The prosigns around SOS
SOS is not the only signal sent as one unbroken run. Prosigns are procedural markers rather than words, and they are written as joined letters for convenience only.

Three of them collide exactly with punctuation marks, which is a good argument
for learning both lists together. AR .-.-. is also the plus sign, BT -...-
is also the equals sign, and KN -.--. is also the opening bracket. Context
decides which is meant, not the pattern. Prosigns, Q-codes and the NATO
alphabet covers the rest.
Common mistakes
Sending it as three letters. Three-unit gaps between the groups make it S, O, S rather than the distress prosign. Run the nine elements together.
Believing it is an abbreviation. It stands for nothing, and the belief that it does is what causes the gaps.
Writing it with bullets or em dashes. A middot or an em dash copied out of a document breaks in every translator. Full stops and hyphens only.
Making the dash too short. A dash that is only slightly longer than a dot turns the whole signal into an unreadable stutter. Three times, every time.
Sending it once and stopping. Repeat it, with a clear pause between repeats, for as long as there is any chance of it being seen or heard.
Sending it fast. Speed helps nobody here. A slow, clean ...---... with an
honest ratio carries further than a rushed one.
Assuming a machine is listening. Nothing automated monitors Morse for distress any more. SOS works because a person recognises it.

Is SOS still used today?
Not as an official maritime distress call. That role went to GMDSS, and no station is monitoring for it. It survives as a pattern people recognise on sight and by ear, which is why it is still worth knowing.
Is SOS the same as Mayday?
No. Mayday is spoken aloud; SOS is a code pattern sent as sound, light or
vibration. Different media, different signals. You can spell the word in Morse,
-- .- -.-- -.. .- -.--, but that is just six letters and nobody is listening
for it. The pattern people recognise is ...---....
Does SOS read the same backwards?
