International Driving Permit in Nepal, and Using Your Nepali Licence Abroad

An International Driving Permit is not a licence. It is a translation of the one you already hold, recognised abroad, and it only works while your Nepali licence is valid and carried with it.

That distinction matters, because a lot of websites sell "international driving licences" that are neither.

What an IDP actually is

• It translates your Nepali licence into a standard format other countries recognise.
• It is only valid alongside your original licence. Show both.
• It does not give you any category you do not already hold.
• It is temporary — typically one to three years, and never longer than your own licence.

If you do not hold a Nepali licence, an IDP is not a way around that.

Getting one in Nepal

You apply against a valid Nepali licence. NASA — the Nepal Automobiles Association — is the issuer usually named, alongside designated transport offices.

What to take:

• Your valid Nepali driving licence, original and a copy
• Two to four passport-size photographs
• The completed application form
• The fee

Reported cost: about NPR 9,600 to 11,600, depending on whether you take one year or three, with a physical booklet costing a little more than a digital copy. Confirm the current fee with the issuer before you go.

The scam to avoid

Search for an IDP and you will find sites selling one for €25 to €40, delivered by email in minutes, often with official-looking seals.

An IDP is only meaningful when issued by an authorised national body. A PDF bought from a search advert is not that, whatever it looks like. At best it is useless; at a foreign checkpoint or a rental desk it can be worse than useless.

Go to the authorised issuer in Nepal. If a site is not a Nepali authority and is not the automobile association, do not buy from it.

Using your Nepali licence abroad

Three separate situations, often confused.

Short visits. Many countries accept a Nepali licence plus an IDP for a tourist stay, especially for a hire car. Check the specific country before you travel — the rules are theirs, not Nepal's.

Moving there. Most countries expect you to convert to a local licence within a set period. A straight swap is rare and depends on a bilateral agreement. In most places you will sit their theory test, their practical test, or both. The Gulf states, where many Nepali drivers go, each have their own rules and they change.

Working as a driver. Assume you will need their licence and their categories. An IDP will not cover professional driving.

The licence abstract, extract and verification letter

If you are converting a licence abroad, or an embassy or employer asks you to prove your Nepali licence is genuine, an IDP is not what you need. You need documents from DOTM.

DOTM issues three things for this:

Where and how long. Reported at 3 to 7 working days in person, commonly through DOTM Ekantakuna. Going via a Nepali embassy from abroad is slower — reported at 2 to 4 weeks — because the embassy has to check the record with DOTM in Nepal.

Get them before you fly if you possibly can. Doing it from Nepal in person is much faster than doing it from another country, and the timing is the single thing most people get wrong.

If you are already abroad, contact the nearest Nepali embassy or consulate and ask them to liaise with DOTM on your behalf. Embassies verify authenticity by checking the DOTM record, so they will normally want a copy of the card or the online record printout, and the original card for content verification.

Before you go, check your licence is in order

Obvious but frequently skipped:

• Is it still valid? Renew before you travel, not after. You can renew in the final year of validity, and there is a 35-day grace period after expiry. Renewal, step by step.
• Do you actually have the smart card? Not just a pass result. Check the print list. How to check.
• Does it show the right categories? An IDP cannot add one. What each category allows.
• Is the name spelled as in your passport? A mismatch between licence and passport causes problems at embassies and rental desks.

If you do not have a licence yet

Get the Nepali one first. Everything on this page depends on it, and there is no international shortcut that skips it.

Common mistakes

• Buying an "international driving licence" online. Only an authorised body can issue an IDP.
• Thinking an IDP replaces your licence. Carry both.
• Expecting a straight swap abroad. Most countries make you sit their tests.
• Leaving the abstract until you are already overseas. Three to seven days in Nepal becomes two to four weeks from abroad.
• Travelling on a licence that expires while you are away.
• A name that does not match your passport.

Country rules change — check the current one

The single most useful habit here is checking the destination's own government site rather than a travel blog. Licence recognition changes with bilateral agreements, and a page written three years ago can be confidently wrong.

Where to look, in order:

1. The destination country's transport or licensing authority website.
2. Their embassy in Nepal, or Nepal's embassy there.
3. Your car rental company, if it is only for a holiday hire — they will tell you exactly what they accept, because it is their risk.

For work abroad, your employer or recruiting agency usually knows the current requirement for that country, and it is worth asking before you pay for anything.
