Driving Licence Renewal in Nepal: The 35-Day Grace Period Almost Nobody Mentions

Your Nepali driving licence expires, and renewing it late costs money. The part almost nobody mentions is that you get a 35-day grace period after the expiry date to renew without a penalty.

That single fact is worth more than anything else on this page, so it goes first. Miss the expiry by a week and you are fine. Miss it by two months and you are paying extra.

Renewal is also now online — but not on the website you are probably thinking of.

Renew on your province portal

The old central site, applydl.dotm.gov.np, is gone. Since Shrawan 1, 2083 each province runs its own eDLVRS portal, and renewal is one of the services on it.

ProvincePortal
Koshiedlvrs.koshi.gov.np
Madheshedlvrs.madhesh.gov.np
Bagmatiedlvrs.bagamati.gov.np
Gandakiedlvrs.gandaki.gov.np
Lumbiniedlvrs.lumbini.gov.np
Karnaliedlvrs.karnali.gov.np
Sudurpaschimedlvrs.sudurpashchim.gov.np

Bagmati is spelled bagamati — with an extra "a". Look for this service:

नवीकरण तथा प्रतिलिपि अनुरोध (renewal and duplicate request)

Renewal and the lost-licence duplicate share one form, which is worth knowing if your licence is both expired and missing. More on the portals.

When to renew

You can renew in the final year of validity. You do not have to wait for the expiry date, and there is no advantage in waiting.

After expiry you have 35 days of grace with no penalty fee. Beyond that, a late fee applies and it grows the longer you leave it.

Practical advice: put a reminder in your phone for one month before the expiry date printed on your card. Renewing early costs nothing extra and removes the whole problem.

How to renew, step by step

  1. Open your province portal and choose the renewal service.
  2. Enter your licence details. The QR on your national ID or the Nagarik App can fill your personal details in automatically.
  3. Upload what is asked for — usually your existing licence and citizenship.
  4. Pay online. eSewa, Khalti, ConnectIPS or bank. Keep the receipt.
  5. Book an appointment if your province requires one for verification or biometrics.
  6. Collect the new smart card when it prints.

Steps 1 to 4 are online. Whether step 5 applies depends on your province and whether your biometrics are already on file.

What it costs

Renewal fees are set by your province now, not nationally. Since FY 2083/84 each province publishes its own schedule. Bagmati, Koshi, Gandaki and Karnali roughly doubled theirs. Madhesh and Lumbini kept the old rates.

Reported figures, which you should treat as a guide and not a quote:

ItemReported amount
Renewal, Category Aabout NPR 800
Renewal, Category Babout NPR 1,000
Renewal, two-wheeler commercialabout NPR 1,500
Renewal, light commercialabout NPR 2,000
Renewal, mediumabout NPR 2,500
Renewal, heavyabout NPR 3,000
Smart card printNPR 200

Check the real number on your own province portal before you pay. Any page showing one national renewal fee table — including the ones ranking above this one — is out of date by design. More on the fee changes.

The new card

You get the smart card format when you renew, if you are still on an older licence. DOTM publishes the card sample with its security features at dotm.gov.np/content/56/smart-card-driving-license-with-security-features/.

The card is printed in batches, so expect a wait, and check the print list before making a trip to collect it. How the print check works.

What if you let it lapse badly?

Renewal is still the route — you do not normally start from scratch and resit the likhit and trial for an expired private licence. What you pay is the renewal fee plus the late penalty.

Two things to be careful about:

  • Do not drive on an expired licence. It is the same problem as no licence at a traffic check, grace period or not.
  • The longer you wait, the more you pay. If it is already late, that is an argument for doing it today, not for putting it off further.

If you are unsure of your exact status, ask your transport office. Since Shrawan 2083 they are run provincially, so your province portal and local office are the right place, not DOTM in Kathmandu.

Renewing from abroad

A common problem, and there is no fully remote route. Renewal needs verification that generally has to happen in person.

The practical options people use:

  • Renew on a trip home. You can start the online application and payment from anywhere, then do the office part when you are in the country. Doing the online half first means one visit instead of two.
  • Time it around the grace period. You have the final year of validity plus 35 days. That is a wide window to plan a visit into.
  • Ask your province office directly about authorised representatives. Rules vary by province now, so a general answer from a blog is worth less than one phone call to the office that will actually process it.

What does not work is letting it lapse for years on the assumption it can be sorted out later in one go. It can, but you pay the late fee for every bit of that delay.

What to check on the new card

When the replacement card arrives, check it before you leave the counter:

  • Your name spelling, exactly as on your citizenship.
  • Date of birth and blood group.
  • Every category you hold. If you added one, confirm both letters are there.
  • The new expiry date.

An error found at the counter is a correction. An error found six months later is a fresh application. It takes thirty seconds to look.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for the expiry date. You can renew in the final year.
  • Not knowing about the 35-day grace period and panicking, or not knowing it ends and drifting past it.
  • Using the old central website. It does not load.
  • Paying a fee you read on a blog. Fees are provincial now.
  • Driving on an expired licence while waiting for the new card.
  • Going to collect without checking the print list.

Adding a category while you are at it

If you have been meaning to add Category B to an A licence, look at the timing. A category add issues a new card showing every category you hold — so doing it around renewal time saves you one card cycle and one trip.

Category add is its own service on the same portal ("अनुमतिपत्र वर्ग थप"), and it does mean sitting the written exam and trial for the new category. Which category you need.

If a new category is on the cards, the written exam comes back into your life. The Category B paper has far more about clutch, gears, brakes and fluids than the bike paper did. I built Yatayat Likhit to keep the category banks separate — pick yours and get that set, with reasoning next to each answer, timed mocks, the Nepali road signs and an Ishihara-style colour-vision test. Free and offline.

Renewal, duplicate or category add — which do you need?

Three different services, easy to confuse, and picking the wrong one wastes an appointment. All three sit on the same province portal.

Your situationWhat you needPortal service
Card is expiring or expired, you still have itRenewalनवीकरण तथा प्रतिलिपि अनुरोध
Card is lost, stolen or damagedDuplicate (pratilipi)नवीकरण तथा प्रतिलिपि अनुरोध
You want to drive a new type of vehicleCategory addअनुमतिपत्र वर्ग थप
Card is lost and expiredDuplicate first, then renewAsk your office the order

Renewal and duplicate share one form, which is why they are listed together. A duplicate needs a traffic police recommendation first and renewal does not — that is the practical difference. The full duplicate process.

Category add is separate because it involves a new written exam and a new trial. It is not a paperwork change.

Questions people ask

What is the grace period for driving licence renewal in Nepal?

35 days after the expiry date, during which you can renew with no penalty fee. After that a late fee applies.

Can I renew my driving licence online in Nepal?

Yes. Use the "नवीकरण तथा प्रतिलिपि अनुरोध" service on your province eDLVRS portal. The old central site no longer works.

How much does renewal cost?

It depends on your province since FY 2083/84. Reported figures are around NPR 800 for Category A and NPR 1,000 for Category B, plus NPR 200 for the smart card. Confirm on your province portal.

How early can I renew?

In the final year of validity. There is no benefit to waiting.

What happens if my licence expired years ago?

You renew and pay a late fee on top. For a private licence you do not normally resit the exams. Ask your transport office to confirm your exact position.
